30-Day Typing Practice Plan: From Beginner Towards 40+ WPM
Speed comes from short, daily, deliberate practice. This plan uses about 20 minutes a day for 30 days. Results vary by person; many beginners reach 30-40 WPM with good accuracy, but nobody can promise a number.
Before you start
- Take a 1 minute typing test and write down WPM and accuracy.
- Sit upright, forearms level, wrists floating, screen at eye level (see posture).
- Turn on finger hints and the on-screen keyboard.
Week 1: learn the keys (days 1-7)
Daily: 15 minutes of lessons (home row, then top and bottom rows) and one 1-minute test. Rule: never look at the keyboard, even if you are slow. Goal: all letters by touch, 90% accuracy.
Week 2: build accuracy (days 8-14)
Daily: 10 minutes of lessons (capitals, punctuation, numbers) and 10 minutes of the accuracy test or Smart Practice on weak keys. Goal: 95% accuracy at about 25 WPM.
Week 3: add rhythm (days 15-21)
Daily: a 3-minute test with sentences, plus a game for fun. Keep a steady pace, no bursts. Use the pace caret slightly above your current speed. Goal: 30-35 WPM at 95%.
Week 4: raise speed (days 22-30)
Daily: a 5 minute test, a weak-key drill and one 1-minute sprint. Increase pace by about 5% only when accuracy stays above 95%. On day 30 repeat your first test and compare.
Checkpoints
| Day | Healthy target |
|---|---|
| 7 | Know all letters without looking, 90% accuracy |
| 14 | 95% accuracy, around 25 WPM |
| 21 | Around 30 WPM, steady rhythm |
| 30 | Often 35-45 WPM with 95%+ accuracy for regular practisers |
If you plateau
Plateaus are normal. Slow down for two days to rebuild accuracy, review your finger report and weak keys, and take a day off. Rest improves motor memory.
