8 Common Typing Mistakes That Slow You Down
If your speed has stopped improving, the cause is usually habit, not talent. These eight mistakes hold back most typists.
1. Looking at the keyboard
Every glance costs time and breaks rhythm. Cover the keys, use the on-screen finger guide and accept slower practice for a week.
2. Using the wrong finger
Stretching an index finger to reach a pinky key creates errors. Check the finger map and run a test to see your finger report.
3. Chasing speed too early
Fast and sloppy produces corrections, and corrections cost more than slow and clean. Hold 95% accuracy, then speed up.
4. Staring at your mistakes
Stopping at every typo breaks your flow. In practice, use Blind mode to stop watching errors and focus on rhythm.
5. Tense shoulders and hands
Pressing keys too hard and hunching slows you and causes strain. Relax, let your wrists float and use a light touch. See posture and ergonomics.
6. Skipping weak keys
Everyone has a few keys that cause most errors (often Q, Z, P, punctuation and numbers). Use Smart Practice, which builds drills from your own mistakes.
7. Not reading ahead
Fast typists read two or three words ahead of the word they are typing. Train your eyes to lead.
8. Practising irregularly
Three long weekend sessions beat nothing, but 15 minutes daily beats both. Use the streak counter and daily challenge to build a habit.
Not sure which applies to you? Take a typing test and read the analysis: weak keys, finger errors and rhythm score point at the main problem.
