SSC Typing Test Preparation: Speed, Rules and a 30-Day Plan
Many SSC recruitments for clerical and data-entry posts end with a typing or data-entry skill test. It is qualifying in nature for most posts, but candidates still fail it every year because they never practised under exam conditions. This guide explains what the test usually looks like and how to prepare.
Usual speed targets
For several SSC posts (for example Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant, Postal and Sorting Assistant) the commonly quoted requirement is about 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi. Official notices express this in key depressions per hour (KDPH): 35 WPM equals 10,500 KDPH and 30 WPM equals 9,000 KDPH, because 5 key depressions count as one word. Data-entry skill tests are often described as 8,000 KDPH over a fixed time, but the figure varies by department, so verify it.
| Language | Typical target | Key depressions per hour | Words in 10 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 35 WPM | 10,500 | 350 |
| Hindi | 30 WPM | 9,000 | 300 |
| Data entry (example) | about 26.7 WPM | 8,000 | 267 |
How the test is scored
Exam typing is not the same as a casual online test. Key points:
- Every key press counts as a key depression; 5 key depressions are 1 word.
- A word that contains even one wrong character is usually counted as a full wrong word.
- Net speed is (typed words − wrong words) divided by the time. Some exams also set a maximum percentage of mistakes.
- Backspace and editing may be restricted. Practising with backspace off is the safest preparation.
Our SSC typing test practice follows this style: a strict 10-minute run with the result split into key depressions, wrong words, gross speed and net speed.
A 30-day plan
- Days 1-7: technique. Finish the touch-typing lessons. Do not look at the keyboard. Target 95% accuracy at any speed.
- Days 8-14: accuracy under time. A daily 5-minute test and one Smart Practice drill on your weakest keys.
- Days 15-24: exam length. One 10-minute strict test every day. Record net WPM and wrong words.
- Days 25-30: simulation. Two full tests per day at the time of your exam slot, on the keyboard type you expect. Rest the last day.
Mistakes that fail candidates
- Chasing speed and ending with too many wrong words. Slow down by 10% if wrong words exceed your limit.
- Ignoring capital letters, punctuation and spacing in the passage.
- Practising only 1-minute tests; 10 minutes tests stamina.
- Not checking the language and layout the exam uses.
On the exam day
Reach early, adjust your seat and screen, read the instructions twice and do not retype lines you already finished. Keep a steady rhythm; a calm 10 minutes beats a fast start and a panicked finish. Convert your goals with the WPM calculator if your notification quotes KDPH.
