Touch Typing vs Hunt and Peck: Which Is Faster?

Many people type with two or four fingers and look at the keys. Others use all ten fingers without looking. The difference matters more than most people think.

What is hunt and peck?

Hunt-and-peck typists find each key with their eyes and press it with one or two fingers. It is easy to start with, and some self-taught typists become surprisingly quick, but their eyes must keep moving between keyboard and screen.

What is touch typing?

Touch typing means each finger owns a set of keys and returns to the home row (A S D F and J K L ;). Your eyes stay on the text while your fingers find keys by feel. See our guide to finger positions.

Why touch typing usually wins

Speed has a ceiling with two fingers because each finger covers too much distance. Ten fingers share the work, and since you read ahead while typing, rhythm becomes smooth. Exams and many jobs expect speeds that are hard to reach with hunt-and-peck.

How to switch without frustration

  • Accept that you will be slower for 1-2 weeks. Speed returns above your old level.
  • Practise 15-20 minutes daily with the lessons, not at work on deadlines.
  • Cover the keyboard or use the finger-colour guide on screen.
  • Focus on accuracy first.
