How the speed test works

The timer starts with your first key press. When 60 seconds are over you see net WPM (correct characters divided by five, per minute), raw WPM, accuracy and a second-by-second graph. Sentences with capitals and punctuation make the result closer to real work than random words.

Use the same conditions every time - same keyboard, same time of day - if you want to compare results.

How do you compare?

  • Under 25 WPM: beginner.
  • 25-39 WPM: below the usual office level.
  • 40-59 WPM: average to good; most adults are here.
  • 60-79 WPM: advanced.
  • 80+ WPM: expert, roughly the top few percent.

After the test

Look at the weak keys and the finger report in your result, then use Smart Practice to drill them. For a longer measurement try the 5 minute test; to convert your WPM to keystrokes per hour use the WPM calculator.
