Why punctuation lowers your WPM

Shift combinations and symbol keys force your fingers away from the home row. Many typists lose 10-20% speed when punctuation appears. Training it separately closes the gap.

Tips

  • Use the Shift key on the opposite side of the letter you are capitalising.
  • Keep your pinkies relaxed; tension slows the quotes and brackets.
  • Practise the lesson "Shift & punctuation" (Lessons stage 4) for guided drills.
  • Do not skip commas - accuracy counts them as errors.
