RRB NTPC typing test at a glance

The CBTST is the typing stage for the NTPC posts that include typing. Sources describe it as a qualifying test: you must reach the minimum speed, but it is not added to your merit marks.

WhatCommonly quoted
Speed30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi
Duration10 minutes of evaluated typing (practice time and breaks differ in different guides)
Words neededAt least 300 English or 250 Hindi words typed for the transcript to be checked (some guides write this as 1,500 / 1,250 keystrokes)
EditingSpell-check and editing aids are not allowed
NatureQualifying only, according to the guides we read

Key depressions per hour (KDPH) are simply WPM x 5 x 60: 30 WPM = 9,000 KDPH (English), 25 WPM = 7,500 KDPH (Hindi).

How the test is evaluated

The only official document we found was an older RRB notice; the 2026 cycle's own instructions may differ. Read the CBTST notice on your RRB zone's website and your admit card.

  • Your typed text is compared with the passage; mistakes reduce the net word count.
  • Guides disagree on the exact penalty: some deduct ten words for every final mistake, others count full and half mistakes. Treat these as third-party explanations, not official text.
  • If you type fewer than the minimum number of words, the test may not be evaluated at all - so finish the passage before polishing it.

Hindi typing, fonts and layouts

The Hindi typing test on this site has Inscript, Remington GAIL and Kruti Dev 010 built in. Check which layout your board names in the notification and choose the same one under "Hindi keyboard"; see our guide Inscript vs Remington vs Kruti Dev. For exam-style practice use the Hindi typing exam practice.

  • The RRB notice and guides mention Hindi typing in Krutidev or Mangal font.
  • English is the default language if you do not choose one.
  • The keyboard and font you are tested on are fixed by the board; practise on the same one.

How to prepare for the RRB NTPC typing test

  1. Week 1: touch typing from the free lessons until you type 25 WPM with 95% accuracy.
  2. Week 2: a daily 5 minute typing test and Smart Practice on your weak keys.
  3. Week 3: one strict 10-minute run every day on this page; finish more than 300 words with few mistakes.
  4. Last days: two runs at the time of your exam slot, then rest.

What this practice page does and does not do

  • It runs a strict 10-minute test with backspace switched off, like most government typing tests.
  • The result shows key depressions, wrong words, gross and net speed and checks your net speed against the 30 WPM target used for this page.
  • It is an independent practice tool. The real exam software, passage, font and error rules are the board's own.
  • Typing text is built from general English sentences, not from past papers.
